This book needs to be sent around the world, it needs to hit all religion, all people who have prejudice, and anyone else who are interested in Jehovah's Witnesses and how they look at a Gay person in the organization. I can't say enough about this as it is so well written, probably in the top 5 I have ever read, that was written by an Ex Jehovah Witness. He has a way of making you feel back in time, and then brings you through tears and happiness, but it is a page turner and a big lesson for a lot of people. Also, it is a good book for people to see what they do to their children when they divorce and remarry and do not really know who they are marrying but only that they are of the same religion, you can get into real problems. This step mother was horrible and still said she was a child of God? she treated these young ones less than animals, it was sick. I have never read a book that had so many lessons in it about prejudice, all in one book, you can get a lot of wisdom. Don't miss this book, it is excellent.Product details

This book is a poignant, sometimes gritty tale of a young boy surviving an abuse and neglect filled childhood in a cult driven family. Scott holds nothing back, his honesty and openness could read as a bitter revenge weighted story, instead it reads as a young boy's optimism that things will turn out for the better in the end. His search for love, fairness and acceptance amazes me that he never gives up, he ultimately exceeds what could be an expected outcome based on the trials and abuse he faced. He is the perfect example of the fact that we can change our future, we DON'T have to be a product of our environment, we can create our own best self and not repeat history. Scott, thank you for sharing your past and making yourself vulnerable one more time. Keep winning, never let anyone judge you, look down on you, or use faith to try and beat you down. Bravo Scott, BRAVO!!
An excellent read. An insight into the double standards of Jehovah's witnesses who can treat children so poorly. The writer rises above such an upbringing and becomes a worthy member of society and an inspiration to other young and old trapped in high control cults. I highly recommend this book.
This story is gut-wrenching at times as it tells of one man's life journey from a deprived childhood and religious domination to freedom and self acknowledgment. Take this journey with him, and know that you will not soon forget this story of triumph over such devastating life circumstances…..then count your blessings!
I picked up this book with some trepidation since there are a growing number of gay-kid-survives-religion-and-lives-to-tell-the-tale books out there these days. It's a genre that has been explored. Still, being myself a survivor of both other-and-self-inflicted religiosity, I am drawn to these stories. This one was exceptional, with some elements that made it unique. In this case, the religion was only a part of the story. The bitter step-mother and intentionally blind father added an element of suspense. Would his father ever awaken to what was going on right under his own nose? Also, Mr. Terry is an apt storyteller with a style that engaged and drew me along. In this nearly stream of consciousness retelling of his own childhood and coming of age, we get the facts - their is neither bitterness nor mindless condemnation. One gets the sense that the demons are laid to rest, but the story needed to be told. I wondered why he was writing this book and his explanation in the final few lines cinched it for me. It is an ending that is upbeat and heartfelt but absolutely in no way maudlin nor over accusatory. But do yourself the favor of not jumping ahead. Let him tell you when he tells you, at the very end. It's the proper time and not before.
I pulled back from 5 stars for a couple of reasons. The repetition in Mr. Terry's style of writing at times kept snagging me out of the narrative. He would restate something I had just read, so a little editing could have been done. Also, I wish he told us more about the experience of what it was actually like to ride an untamed animal in the rodeo. It's there, but I wanted to hear more about how that feels in the gut, muscle and bone. What little was there was intriguing and not many of us can said to have had the experience. However, these are small flaws in an otherwise terrific story of survival against large odds - abuse, neglect, emotional scarring and religious fanaticism. Fortunately, set against that was love and a spirit that found release, healing and ultimately peace. Read this book, you won't be sorry.
This book is way better than I was expecting, although I don't know why I was expecting anything less. It is powerful and riveting and sad and angry-making and sometimes I have to stop reading it and look out the train window and wonder how Scott Terry survived at all. Sometimes I find myself remembering things that I either forgotton or pushed out of my head but here they are, my exact thoughts at 14 years old, written down by someone else. Thank you Sean Connery, indeed. Buy this book and read it.
A must-read for anyone who is, was, or is thinking of becoming a Jehovah's Witness. As someone also raised in the religion, so much of what Mr. Terry wrote coincided with my own experiences. In some ways, it was a fascinating trip down memory lane, as there were things I had forgotten. The book is excellently written, with vivid details that fully draw the reader in. I was more moved by this book than anything I've read in a very long time. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
Absolutely loved this book. I am lesbian, a survivor of abuse, and an ex-JW. While I am saddened by Scott Terry's experiences, I am also encouraged that there are people in the ex-jw community that understand the unique hardships that come from being LGBT and growing up a witness. Thank you, Scott, for sharing your life with us.
